Thankfully, the area now attracts people for holidays under much more pleasurable circumstances, although the Jewish descendants still remain, and there is a small synagogue as a symbol of their presence in the area. Playa Dorada Golf Course: Just a little distance from Sosua holidays, this trim modern course has 18 holes of paradise for golfing holidays! Designed by lauded golf architect Robert Trent Jones, the course offers a good degree of challenge with wide sandy bunkers and narrow fairways.

Fun City Action Park: This fun go-kart park is a great way for families to spend an action-packed day during holidays in Sosua. There are actually three different go-kart tracks here, including the Cyclone and Sprint 500, with lots of different vehicles for all levels and speeds. Go for the super-fast Grand Prix cars of take things easy in the midget cars. There’s a playground area at the go-kart park too, so little ones will never be bored during their holidays.

Los Charamicos: The bay on Sosua holidays is actually split into two completely different beaches. Los Charamicos is the place to go if you like sunbathing to be a little livelier on your holidays, with plenty of distractions to keep you occupied. Expect lots of young people on their holidays enjoying the sun’s rays, and many activities out to sea from kite surfing to paragliding.

El Batey: In direct contrast, the beach to the east named El Batey offers a much more chilled out experience for your beach holidays. There are a number of classy beachfront restaurants around this stretch of coastline, and the quiet atmosphere makes this beach the perfect place to relax on a sun lounger with a cool cocktail in hand.

Resto Veintiuno: This authentic restaurant makes the most of the many local fresh ingredients which are sourced direct from the Dominican Republic. Their menu is a unique mixture of modern classics like gazpacho (cold tomato soup) and chicken in white wine sauce, and more traditional offerings like Dorado and prawns with mango chilli dip.

Jolly Roger: Fancy a lively restaurant which offers classic American food? Well Jolly Roger certainly fits the bill! It’s a great place to choose for ice cold branded beer on those balmy evenings in the Dominican Republic, and the food is just as fulfilling too, with dishes like battered fish and huge cheeseburgers with chips. It’s a great place to meet lots of English speaking people on your holidays too, as the restaurant is owned by a Canadian couple.

Casa Valeria: This rustically styled pastel orange restaurant really captures the vibrant spirit of Dominican Republic holidays. Luckily the food is just as exciting as the decor, with an eclectic menu that encompasses cuisine from all over the world. Expect to see all kinds of different dishes, from French onion soup to spaghetti Bolognese and buttered steak.

Nightlife in Sosua


Lively holidays: Sosua holidays are some of the liveliest of all holidays to the Dominican Republic, and this is certainly reflected in the raucous nature of the bars in the area. The main nightspots include Club 59 (which has a focus on Latin music), Voodoo Lounge (a classy nightclub) and Club X. Plaza Merengue is also a lively bar serving cool cocktails with a lively, all-action attitude. At some streets in the centre there is a tendency for men to be accosted by ladies of the night, but a polite ‘no’ should suffice. If you’d prefer to avoid any such advances, you may prefer to stay in your hotel, especially if you’re on all inclusive holidays, as many have nightly evening entertainment.

Shopping in Sosua


Souvenir shopping: Sosua holidays seem to specialise in those informal market stalls which sell lots of very touristy items such as cigars, beaded bracelets and t-shirts. And be prepared to haggle too, as often you can buy items at half the starting price! If you look hard enough it’s also entirely possible to find some authentic mementoes of your time on holidays in Sosua. For example, Johnson’s is a quality jewellery store with great prices on gold, silver and the indigenous precious stones of the island, larimar and amber.
