Roquetas de Mar Overview

Peaceful resort: Roquetas de Mar holidays were very quiet until the 1990s, when holidaymakers started to realise the charms of this sunny spot on the Costa de Almeria. It’s still rather peaceful today, with plenty of space on its open beaches and parks.

Very long beach: The coastline of Roquetas de Mar stretches for over 3km and is a flat expansive plain of light golden sand. As holidays here are still quieter than many other holidays in Costa de Almeria, you’ll have plenty of space to sunbathe too.

Great golf course: Considered the flattest course in Spain, the long-established Club de Golf Playa Serena has large fairways and nine lakes spread over 18 holes.

Attractions in Roquetas de Mar

Castillo de Santa Ana: This seventeenth century castle stands as an impressive example of renaissance architecture. It’s sand-coloured cobbled walls and imposing cannons at the front gate were all restored to their former glory in 1995. Currently, it is often used as a gallery for photography and art exhibitions. With the rich history and artwork this castle should be top of your list for sights to see whilst on holidays in Roquetas de Mar.

Nuestra Senora del Rosario: This elegant baroque church is etched with decorative stonework and intricate patterns in almost every area. Of particular interest is the altar which tells the story of the Virgin Mary.

Activities in Roquetas de Mar

Club de Golf Playa Serena: This incredibly flat golf course has many attractive features which have many keen golfers coming back here for their holidays year on year. The greens are always in tip-top condition, and fairway drives are kept interesting with 9 lakes and lots of sandy bunkers. Scenic views of pine-clad mountains in the distance make for a pleasant walk to your next shot too.

Las Marinas: Just 5km south of Roquetas de Mar, you’ll find this nature reserve and large salt lake. Today it has become a popular habitat with a variety of birdlife, with many exotic species migrating from the arid landscapes of Africa to reach this watering point. Expect to take snaps of bright pink flamingos and cute little thin-beaked avocets to wow your friends with when you come back from your holidays.

Roquetas Aquarium: This large, modern Aquarium is well worth a visit, especially as the tanks contain many different species of tropical fish. Amongst the brightly coloured and unusually shaped sealife, you’ll see elegantly gliding manta rays, octopuses and scary-looking sharks!

Karting Roquetas: A large circuit with karts to suit both adults and children. It’s a great way to have fun on your family holidays, as the children’s karts are specially designed so adults can control the brakes while their child controls the steering.

Beaches in Roquetas de Mar

Roquetas de Mar Beach: At over 3km, this exceptionally long stretch of sand is the real treasure of holidays to Roquetas de Mar. A palm tree lined promenade follows the light golden sand all the way along the coastline, and out to sea it’s well-facilitated with all kinds of water sports, including jet-skiing, windsurfing and parasailing.

Aguadulce Beach: This beautiful golden beach is 4km north of Roquetas de Mar, in the small holiday resort of Aguadulce. Make the short journey there and you’ll enjoy bright sunshine, calm seas and a wide stretch of sand. The northern end of the beach is incredibly scenic too, with a craggy brown cliff face casting an imposing sight over the coast.

Restaurants in Roquetas de Mar

Chino Canton: A top Chinese restaurant which serves both classic dishes and other more unusual authentic choices too. The menu is great value, so you can have a slap-up meal whilst still ensuring that cheap holidays to Roquetas de Mar stay cheap. All your favourites are here, including Sweet ‘n’ Sour Pork and Spicy Beef in Black Bean Sauce.

Wild Coyote: It may not be the most authentic place to eat during your holidays to Roquetas de Mar, but this American-style grill that serves huge portions of steaks, burgers and chicken skewers. All come with tasty side orders of flavoured fries and fresh salad. The Ribs with Apple Sauce dish is highly recommended.

Toscana: A may be a surprise to see a Spanish-owned pizzeria on your holidays here, but this one has a special stone oven built into the wall. This results in delicious stone-baked pizza dough with a variety of fresh toppings. They also offer Calzones too, which are an interesting twist on pizzas – made by folding a pizza in half and sealing all the delicious topping inside.

Nightlife in Roquetas de Mar

Many British bars: Rather unusually for an authentically Spanish town, Roquetas de Mar holidays have a large number of British bars. These watering holes are great if you fancy having a few drinks with like-minded people, with the added ease of everyone speaking English. There’s The Miners Arms which has a dartboard to add to its pub style atmosphere, and Marley’s Bar which serves some of the best Full English Breakfasts in the resort.

Shopping in Roquetas de Mar

Gran Plaza Shopping Centre: It’s easy to spend a whole day shopping in this large, modern centre. There are over 120 shops including many brands which are famous in the UK like McDonald’s, Mango and Zara. Of course, you can expect some Spanish brands too, which is brilliant if you’d like to bring back something unique from your holidays in Roquetas de Mar. As a bonus, there’s a bowling alley and English-speaking cinema that’ll definitely keep the kids entertained.
