The baths have been reduced to mere cobblestone foundations, but it’s still interesting to see the remnants of a structure that’s so old.

Praia da Luz: With cotton-soft white sand and the backdrop of dusky mountains in the distance, the beach on your Praia da Luz holidays is a real beauty. It’s also a great place to choose if you like your holidays that little bit more active, as there are all sorts of water sports to try here.

Playa do Vau: Connected to Praia da Luz Beach, and pretty much an extension of it, this beach has a similar narrow strip of soft white sand leading to crystalline waters. However, of real interest here are the golden cliffs and caves that offer cooling shade and even some places to explore for little ones.

Praia Dona Ana: Close to Lagos town centre, around 6km away from Praia da Luz holidays, this beach is well worth travelling to. It’s one of the most photographed stretches of coastline in Portugal, and with good reason too. The most stunning aspect of the beach is that it’s enclosed on all sides by layers of multi-coloured cliff faces. However, the lightly golden beach and turquoise waters are just as appealing.

A converted 16th century fortress, the interiors are a grand affair of cobbled arches, open fires and rustic wooden tables.
