Menorca, Balearic Islands
Somewhat overlooked in favour of Majorca and Ibiza, Menorca is a real underrated jewel of the Balearic Islands. Compared to its noisy neighbours, this island exudes a much more relaxed vibe blending calm beach towns with family-friendly resorts.
Lying a couple of miles east of Majorca, Menorca combines beautiful beaches ranging from classic busy shorefronts to unassuming coves these are the perfect places to unwind for families and couples alike. However, it is not just a beach destination with areas such as Menorca Biosphere Reserve and the Parc Natural S’Albufera d’es Grau wetlands adding to the stunning landscape to enjoy. It may be the smaller relation to its bigger brothers, but Menorca can be the perfect holiday destination.
Immense natural beauty
The thing that sets Menorca apart from the rest of the Balearic Islands is its outstanding landscape and beautiful scenery. Thanks to its size, the island is a great place to drive around and simply take in the surroundings. From the bustling capital of Mahon to the picturesque holiday resort of Cala en Bosc, you can weave through the amazing countryside or follow the coast enjoying the views.
When visiting Mahon you have to take a trip down to the harbour and admire the yachts lined up along the shore. The harbour is pretty famous and is the second largest natural deep water port in the world – Pearl Harbour being the biggest – playing a part in Menorca’s rich history. Take a seat in one of the marina’s restaurants and enjoy the warm weather and relaxed atmosphere.
One of the best ways to explore Menorca is by hiring a car and hitting the open road. Drive from Mahon to the western side of the island passing by miles of luscious greenery and quaint villages before reaching the picturesque city of Ciutadella de Menorca. The island’s ‘second city’ is characterised by its beautiful Italian style architecture developed during the 17th century. It too has a port, perfect for wandering around on a warm day.
The Balearic Islands’ rise in popularity has seen Menorca blossom into a go-to tourist destination. Resorts such as Cala Blanca, Cala en Bosch and Cala Llonga offer that family-friendly vibe with beaches, waterparks and catered hotels that will appeal to every type of holidaymaker. The quieter areas of Cove Noves and Binibeca offer an escape ideal for couples.
