Attractions in Mellieha
Gozo excursions: Mellieha holidays are around 3km away from the ferry terminal on the northern tip of Malta. From here, you can travel another 3km by boat to the charming island of Gozo. There’s a number of interesting attractions to see on the island, including the Cathedral of Gozo, Ta Pinu Basilica (a majestic Roman Catholic church visited by the current Pope) and the Azure Window (a rock formation dating back millions of years and used for the setting in many films). And that’s not forgetting the awe-inspiring Ggantija temples which are more than 5500 years old and have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site as one of the oldest religious structures. Considering it’s just 6km away, Gozo is certainly a must-visit during your holidays in Mellieha.
Activities in Mellieha
Ghadira Nature Reserve: Next to Mellieha Bay (the most popular beach in Malta) you’ll come across this official nature reserve. A combination of wetlands and salt marsh, it’s the ideal habitat for a variety of birds and wildlife. As you can imagine, it’s a birdwatcher’s delight as more than 200 species have been recorded here!
Il Majjistral Nature Park: Declared a National Park in 2007, Il Majjistral has much to interest those who love nature and wildlife. During your Mellieha holidays you can actually take guided walks to see the dramatic coastline, colourful flowers and unusual rock formations.
Popeye Village: Conceived after the 1980 Popeye movie was filmed here, this vibrant theme park offers lots of fun to families on Mellieha holidays. An entire wooden village was created for the film, and amazingly it is still in existence today as part of the park. Wonder around the bright buildings, and after enjoy the play park which features bumper cars, go-karts and water dinghies.
Beaches in Mellieha
Sunny Coast Lido: Conveniently located in the centre of Qawra, just 2km away from Mellieha, this lido is one of the best of its kind in Malta. The area of St Paul’s Bay doesn’t really offer much in the way of sandy beaches, but it more than makes up for it with this excellently equipped lido.
Mellieha Bay: Considered by many to be the best beach in Malta, this golden sandy stretch is one of the main reasons why many people come to Mellieha for their holidays in Malta. It’s well worth travelling here to enjoy emerald sea line and the huge selection of water sports. It’s easy to understand why this is Malta’s most popular beach!
Golden Bay: Around 2km from Mellieha, this gorgeous golden beach is quite easy to travel to during your holidays. This one is surrounded by rocky cliffs and lush green countryside, making it even more appealing.
Restaurants in Mellieha
Bouquet Garni: In a very authentic Maltese building, Bouquet Garni offers suitably authentic Maltese dishes. You’ll love to savour the succulent flavours of fillet steak, rack of lamb and oven baked sea bass during your Mellieha holidays.
Il-Mithna: Another traditional Maltese restaurant to discover on your Mellieha holidays, Il-Mithna has a charming fusion of modern decor housed within a rustic cobbled stone building. Top recommendations include lamb cutlets, Maltese sausage and asparagus tartlet.
Giuseppi’s: Based in a quaint corner house on a quiet road in Mellieha, this restaurant serves both Italian and Maltese fare. Be sure to try the excellent Beef Carpaccio, sea bass and imqaret (a Maltese delicacy of deep fried dates wrapped in pastry).
Nightlife in Mellieha
Bugibba bars: In general, Malta holidays are much quieter than many holidays in the Mediterranean and this can certainly be said of Mellieha holidays. However, Bugibba is only 3km away and it’s certainly a little livelier than many other resorts you’ll come across on the island. In Bugibba, much of the action is centred on one of the main town squares, II Baja Square. It’s here you’ll come across a few loud and lively clubs like Amazonia and the Odeum. Some bars can be pretty raucous, such as the Corner Pocket (which offers a winning blend of pool and karaoke) and Wise Guys. But in Bugibba is perfectly possible to discover the ideal home-from-home experience, with British style boozers such as The Grapevine Pub, The Abyss and The Red Lion.
Shopping in Mellieha
Bugibba Shopping Centre: Although Mellieha holidays don’t have much choice in the way of shopping, you could certainly find souvenirs to bring back home from your holidays in this two-tier mall just 3km away in Bugibba. It’s ideal for picking up postcards, newspapers and surprisingly cheap leather goods.
City shopping: If you’d like to broaden your horizons a little when it comes to shopping on Malta holidays, you should make the 20km journey to the capital, Valletta. In the many independent shops here it’s possible to pick up flavoured liquors, handmade glass and boutique fashions. There’s also a large shopping centre (with cinema screens) and some lively street markets.
