Las Palmas Overview

Historic centre: When it comes to holidays in Gran Canaria, the status of Las Palmas as the capital makes it rather different to the more traditional holidays in the south. The historic old town in the centre, or La Vegeuta as it is known, has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And the charming little square of Plaza Santa Ana features two bronze statues of dogs dating back to the 16th century, much the same age as many of the buildings here.

Great beaches: Surprisingly for a capital city, there are two fabulous golden beaches on Las Palmas holidays which are conveniently close by. Playa de las Canteras is a 3km-long cove along the coastal edge of Las Palmas, while the Playa de las Alcaravaneras is a smaller beach which joins onto the harbour.

Attractions in Las Palmas

Santa Ana Cathedral: Construction began on this large cathedral in Las Palmas in 1478 – yet it wasn’t finished for another 350 years! As a result the architecture of the building is an unusual mishmash of different styles. A small art gallery, the Museo Diocesano, is within the cathedral walls and houses religious paintings and sculptures by many significant artists. It’s a superb sight to see on your holidays in Las Palmas.

Activities in Las Palmas

Museo Canario: If you fancy truly immersing yourself in the culture on holidays to the Canary Islands, then this museum is for you. This interesting little place has a diverse range of artefacts that were found on the Canary Islands. It also attempts to shed some light on the original inhabitants of the Canaries, the surprisingly light-skinned, fair-haired Guanches people. You can view items dating right back to the 2nd century BC from this isolated civilisation in the permanent exhibition.

Casa Museo de Colon: A very unique museum, in that it’s solely focused on celebrating the life of Christopher Colombus and the Spanish exploration of the world. Gran Canaria, and the capital Las Palmas in particular, was an important stopping point between Spain and America, and the museum includes artefacts and models to shed some light on the amazing discoveries of Colombus’s sea-bound journeys.

Beaches in Las Palmas

Playa de las Canteras: Certainly the biggest and best beach you’ll see on Canary Islands holidays in the north, this 3km stretch of golden brown sand is very close to the centre of Las Palmas. There’s a natural reef out to sea which has the effect of calming the Atlantic waters, making for safe swimming and bathing.

Playa de las Alcaravaneras: At around 1km long, this beach is a fairly decent size too. The sand here is pleasingly soft, fine and golden, plus it’s conveniently close to the centre of Las Palmas, so it’s unsurprising this beach is popular all year round with both tourists and locals on their holidays. It also adjoins the harbour, where you’ll find the Varadero Sailing Club and Club Nautico – filled with the shiny yachts of millionaires and celebrities.

Restaurants in Las Palmas

Labuenavida: This restaurant in the centre of Las Palmas has a very stylish, modern design which provides the perfect setting for the contemporary dishes on offer. The menu includes Tuna Steak in Teriyaki Sauce and Mushroom Risotto; all presented in a creative style that almost looks too good to eat! You should certainly treat yourself to a meal at this restaurant, even if you’re on all inclusive holidays in Las Palmas.

Casa Galicia: A traditional but wonderful fish restaurant, where most of the dishes are served simply, fresh and full of flavour. Crab, Lobster and Oysters are some of the luxury seafood dishes you can indulge in here. The desserts come highly recommended too, such as Almond Tart or Home-Made Ice Cream.

Kamakura: It may be surprising to come across this eatery on your holidays to Las Palmas but you’ll be pleased to know this Japanese restaurant serves utterly authentic cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere. If you’re a fan or sushi and sashimi then you’re in luck! Plus you can watch the chef prepare your dishes right in front of you.

Nightlife in Las Palmas

Sophisticated holidays: Holidays to Gran Canaria are well-known for their frenetic nightlife, especially in Playa del Ingles. But Las Palmas holidays offer a much more relaxed, stylish night out. Take Las Brujas for example, it’s a converted Canarian mansion (dating from the 1500s) with an ornate interior. You can choose to have a quiet drink in one of its decorative rooms, or even have a delicious luxury meal there too. In contrast, Que Tal is a cool, quirky design bar with an artistic ethic, or there’s the Charleston Cafe which stays open to the early hours with live performances.

Shopping in Las Palmas

Centro Comercial Las Arenas: The biggest shopping centre in Las Palmas; this massive shopping mall has over 200 shops, plus a multi-screen cinema and a selection of restaurants. The great thing is you’ll see many branded shops you recognise here too, like the Disney Store, H&M, Zara, and Mango.

A choice of shops: As well as Las Arenas, there’s another huge shopping centre in Las Palmas named El Corte Ingles. It’s a renowned department store with centres all over Spain that house many designer boutiques. For something a little more unique as a souvenir from holidays to Gran Canaria, you could browse the independent shops in the old quarter of Vegueta and Triana. Plus, there’s the Las Palmas Market held every Sunday where you can barter for your bargains, ensuring cheap holidays to Las Palmas are entirely possible! It’s one of the biggest markets in Gran Canaria so it’s well worth a visit.
