La Romana Overview

Lively holidays: La Romana is the third largest city in the Dominican Republic, and as such there’s no shortage of things to see and do. It’s now become one of the most popular holidays in the Dominican Republic, thanks to the abundance of beautiful beaches and cultural attractions.

Cultural delights: On the subject of cultural attractions, La Romana holidays are the home of Altos de Chavon, the famous replica village modelled on 15th century style buildings. It’s now a community base for artists and designers, and attracts many global pop stars to perform at its Roman-style amphitheatre.

Beach holidays: Many people have holidays in La Romana principally for the glorious beach, and you won’t be disappointed. It’s a beautiful stretch of powder soft white sand which leads into inviting turquoise waters.

Activities in La Romana

Altos de Chavon: Altos de Chavon was created as a reconstruction of a European Medieval town in 1976. As many local artists were encouraged to provide their creativity to the project, Altos has a prestigious art and design school too. The main highlights to see are a 5,000 seat amphitheatre where many famous pop acts have performed and the Tudor style St Stanislaus Church. It’s a real unique experience to visit here during your holidays in La Romana.

Regional Museum of Archaeology: Actually within the Altos de Chavon village, this charming little museum has some real artefacts and exhibitions based around the time when La Romana was first colonised by the Spanish back in the 16th century.

Teeth of the Dog Golf Course: This stunning links-style golf course follows the coastline for some dramatic views while you play across its 18 holes on holidays here. The fairways and greens are perfectly trimmed, with clipped exotic trees and stunning water features adding even more intrigue on golfing holidays to the Dominican Republic.

Beaches in La Romana

Bayahibe: This beach has a rather laid back vibe, but luckily it also has the super soft white sand and turquoise waters characteristic of the beaches on Dominican Republic holidays. The beaches on La Romana holidays are also quite tailored to tourist holidays, so you’ll be able to find a few rustic beach shacks further back from the beach.

Dominicus Beach: Alongside Bayahibe, Domincus Beach is another glorious stretch of soft white sand. Dominican law states that the first 100 metres of a beach must be public property, so even if you’re not having all inclusive holidays at the hotels here, you’re guaranteed a good stretch of beach to sunbathe on. Dominicus beach was also actually the first beach in the Dominican Republic to receive the prestigious Blue Flag award for cleanliness and safety, making it a good choice if you’re on family holidays here.

Restaurants in La Romana

Le Vivier: This authentic French restaurant makes the most of La Romana’s fantastic seafood by serving gourmet delights like lobster and extremely rare locally sourced steak! This restaurant is worth a visit even if you’re on all inclusive holidays here.

Restaurante Yssamar: A very traditional and rustically styled beachfront restaurant. Here you can try local dishes with exotic ingredients such as mashed plantain and sticky fried bananas for dessert.

Trigo de Oro: A great place for a little light lunch during the day. Try the traditional pasties and sweet cakes, all washed down with a full and flavoursome coffee grown in the Dominican Republic. The offerings here make for a cheap lunchtime eat during holidays in La Romana.
