Travel to the east and you’ll reach Malia and Agios Nikolaos, or travel to the west and you’ll come across all the sights and sounds of the capital Heraklion, plus the towns of Rethymnon, Gouves and Chania.

Lychnostatis: This charming open-air museum focuses on what life was like in Crete in the 19th century, before the industrial age transformed the island. You’ll be able to roam freely around this mini-village to see buildings such as a chapel, a farmer’s house and a ceramic workshop, plus there’s an old olive oil press and sweet smelling herb and fruit gardens. And if you have your holidays in Hersonissos at certain times in the season, you’ll also have the opportunity to watch cultural events at the 150 seat auditorium or the 250 seat open-air theatre.

Activities in Hersonissos

Aqua World: Crete’s first aquarium, Aqua World is an exciting place to visit on family holidays, thanks to the multitude of tropical fish, marine life and reptiles on show. And when you’ve paid for entry once, you can revisit the aquarium as many times as you like, making it a top choice for cheap holidays in Hersonissos.

Star Beach Water Park: Located right by the beach and with free entrance, the Star Beach Water Park is your one-stop destination for entertainment on cheap holidays in Hersonissos. For those on family holidays there’s an adventure playground and mini water slides, whilst party animals can visit the foam parties, five bars and four different club nights!

Aqua Plus: Whereas Star Beach is focused on entertainment around the water, Aqua Plus is much more about the slides and rides! Attractions here include the Aqua Slalom, the huge 220m Black Hole and the appropriately choppy Crazy River. With over 12 different rides, cafes and a playground, Aqua Plus certainly makes a fun day out for family holidays.

Beaches in Hersonissos

Hersonissos Port Beach: This centrally located beach has a long yet thin strip of golden sand. It can get rather busy, but the real advantage of Hersonissos Port Beach is that it’s close to all the action and very convenient if you’re having your holidays in the local hotels.

Limanakia: This charming series of rocky coves has some short narrow strips of sand for peaceful sunbathing during holidays in Hersonissos. The dramatic cliffs also attract lots of daredevil divers looking to jump off the edge into the deep blue sea below!

Star Beach: Whilst Star Beach is mainly known for its slides, playgrounds and mad foam parties, it does actually own a section of sandy beach too. Entrance is completely free, so it’s perfect for cheap holidays in Hersonissos and the clean golden sands of the beach have been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag.

Restaurants in Hersonissos

Vostalo: This authentic restaurant is the place to go during your holidays in Hersonissos if you want to try authentic, home-cooked Greek food. Sample the classic Greek Salad drizzled in olive oil with huge juicy tomatoes or the beef stifado (a thick stew with onions). The setting is very Greek too, as the restaurant is housed in a cream coloured building surrounded by leafy green plants.

CoastMed Restaurant: This beachfront restaurant offers a large and varied menu that encompasses both Greek favourites and inventive modern cooking. Being based right on the coast, you can expect excellent seafood dishes such as salmon in saffron sauce, lobster salad and grilled grouper in lemon and ginger. There are live jazz nights too making for a memorable dining experience on holidays in Hersonissos.

Kymata: This classy restaurant takes a modern approach to Greek dining. Combining local Cretan ingredients with simple, flavour-filled dishes, you’ll appreciate ideas on the menu like using ginger in linguini and stuffing burgers with smoked cheese. And we really must mention the view – most of the tables are positioned alongside full length windows that take in the beautiful panoramic views of the coastline – a real treat on Hersonissos holidays.

Nightlife in Hersonissos

Clubbing holidays: Hersonissos holidays have a vibrant and varied nightlife scene that incorporates everything from quiet bars to loud clubs. If you’re up for clubbing holidays you’ll find lots for you here, such as Amnesia, an all-action dance club which plays host to big name DJs and some extreme foam parties! And the unique thing about Status club is that the upstairs has its very own ice cream bar – a great feature which should be in every dance club if you ask us! The Ya Bar and Matrix Club also follow a similar manic theme, with the latter having a huge dance floor, full strobe lights and dazzling neon effects. Camelot is another, slightly less packed club which follows another common feature of the clubs in Hersonnisos – entry is often completely free. So it’s easy to have very cheap holidays in Hersonissos!

Chilled out holidays: The variety of Hersonnisos holidays is shown in the fact that you can choose to chill out at a quiet laid back bar catered to the British, or you can go to a mad and manic club just next door! There are home-from-home pubs with places like the White Lion offering classic British grub like sausages and mash and steak ‘n’ ale pie. It also has a couple of huge Sky TVs showing all the latest sports action. In a similar vein, the Sports Bar also has several widescreen TVs (33 in total!) but with the added bonus of pool tables, computer games and table football! Look out for Nostos bar if you’re into your karaoke and want to sing the night away on your holidays too!

Shopping in Hersonissos

Souvenirs: On Hersonissos holidays it’s easy place to pick up souvenirs thanks to the numerous stalls dotted around the main streets. The traders sell all kinds of things to buy as a memento of your holidays here - everything from beaded bracelets to polished ceramics and handmade figurines.

Stylish holidays: You may be surprised to learn that holidays in Hersonissos are also pretty good for shopping for fashion and jewellery. Envie is a fantastic shop which has lots of branded styles at cheap prices, as well as great value leather goods. And be sure to visit Kasavetis shopping centre, it has a wide variety of shops selling all sorts of clothes, from sizzling swimwear to that perfect little black dress for steamy nights out during your holidays!
