Guardamar del Segura Overview

Green spaces: There are two beautiful parks in Guardamar del Segura – Alfonso and Reina Sofia. Besides being pleasant swathes of green within the town, both were actually designed with a very specific purpose: to protect hundreds of buildings from sand dune damage. Wind-blown sand dunes used to sweep across the northern end of the resort, but thanks to the thousands of palms, eucalyptus and pine trees, the dunes now merely collect within the parks themselves.

Beach holidays: There are seven golden sandy beaches you can visit on holidays to Guardamar del Segula. As you can imagine, that gives you a whole lot of choice when it comes to deciding on where to sunbathe. Maybe you could pick a different one for each day of the week!

Brilliant markets: Guardamar del Segula holidays have built up quite a reputation for being one of the best places on the Costa Blanca for market shopping. There are two main markets throughout the week, plus a small selection of stalls open every night.

Attractions in Guardamar del Segura

Guardamar Castle: Built during the Moorish period of the 12th century, this charming castle has all the hallmarks of Medieval construction. The flat, large walls of the castle perched on a hilly vantage point had clear strategic advantages for defending the town. Although much of the castle was ravaged by an earthquake in the 19th century, it was been declared an official monument by the Spanish government in 2003. As a result, restoration work has been stepped up on the site to bring it back to its former glory and make it the principal attraction on holidays to Guaradamar del Segura 2019.

Activities in Guardamar del Segura

Reina Sofia Park: This leafy park lies near the coast, just to the north of the centre of Guardamar del Segura. Alongside Alfonso Park, it was actually created to protect the town’s buildings from the sand dunes which sweep across the Mediterranean Sea. With high palms and pines it’s easy to find a quiet shady spot for a nice picnic at lunchtime. There are also a number of peaceful lakes and all kinds of wildlife dotted around the park including peacocks, swans, terrapins, ducks and squirrels. The size of the park means it also accommodates outdoor festivals and concerts during the summer holidays season.

Park Alfonso: Named after the monarchs of Spain, King Alfonso XIII and Queen Sofia, the two parks created to protect the sand dunes actually sit side by side near the centre of Guardamar del Segura. Alfonso is very similar in style to Reina Sofia, except it seems to have a larger build up of sand dunes. It’s rather unusual to see mounds of sand interspersed with huge pine trees! The park is also slightly longer, and has an elegant tree-lined pathway leading from one end to the other.

La Marquesa Golf Course: An intensely green, well-maintained golf course which has enjoyed over 20 successful years so far. With hilly fairways and large bunkers, the 18 holes provide a good degree of challenge. Plus there’s the added bonus of great weather and some beautiful mountainside scenery. Great for a spot of golf on your holidays to Guardamar del Segura.

Beaches in Guardamar del Segura

Playa Centro: The most popular of the beaches in Guardamar del Segura, and as the name suggests it’s located alongside the centre of town. It’s also very convenient if you’re having your holidays in the main hotels in the centre of the resort. There are many restaurants and bars which line this stretch of coast too. The beach itself is a flat and wide plain of light golden sand.

Playa del Moncayo: Many of the beaches in Guardamar del Segura have a similar look, largely because they’re actually on the same stretch of coast, divided into separate sections. Again, Playa del Moncayo is an exceptionally flat, open expanse of light, soft sand, and the azure Mediterranean Sea seems to stretch for miles into the distance.

Playa del Campomar: The southernmost beach in Guardamar del Segura, Playa del Campomar is another very open, wide stretch of soft sand. The benefit of so much space meaning you’ve always got room to set up your things and lie on a sun bed for a good day’s sunbathing during your holidays. The beach is well supported with water sports too, such as jet-skiing and parasailing. You could even choose to enjoy a massage from the masseuses on the beachfront.

Restaurants in Guardamar del Segura

La Proa: A quality traditional Spanish restaurant, with a particular focus on seafood. The Mariscos Fritos dish comes highly recommended, which is basically a seafood platter lightly fried in rich olive oil. Simple but delicious!

Akropolis: This well-regarded Greek restaurant serves many classic dishes including fresh Feta Salad, Falafel, and garlicky Tsatsiki. The food is utterly authentic so it’s well worth sampling the cuisine for a change from the usual Spanish and British eateries you’d expect to find on holidays to Costa Blanca.

Internacional: A fantastic Chinese restaurant which prides itself on fast, friendly service in clean, spotless surroundings. You’ll find all your favourites on the menu too, including Crispy Duck with Pancakes, Beef in Black Bean Sauce and Chicken in Sweet ‘n’ Sour Sauce.

Nightlife in Guardamar del Segura

Many bars: For a fairly small resort which specialises in quieter holidays, the number of good bars in Guardamar del Segura is rather surprising. You’ve got your British bars such as Alfie, Hoops, Shamrock and Larkman, many of which serve hearty British meals and lager on tap from well known brands. You also have a big selection of Spanish bars like Casakito and Silvanio where you can sample some tapas, listen to authentic guitar music and even watch some flamenco dancing for a more traditional experience on holidays to Guardamar del Segura.

Shopping in Guardamar del Segura

Outdoor markets: Although there are some souvenir and beach shops selling lots of different items to tourists, the best place for a full day’s shopping is at the markets in Guardamar del Segura. On both Wednesdays and Sundays there are full markets with over 500 stalls set up selling all kinds of products. We’d recommend looking out for cheap leather as it’s great quality and at fraction of the cost on holidays here than the price you’d pay back in the UK.
