Carvoeiro Overview
Nature holidays: Carvoeiro holidays are in a beautiful location on the western side of the Algarve coast. Close to many stunning headlands, the pinnacle of Carvoeiro’s natural beauty culminates in Algar Seco. This awe-inspiring nature site is a combination of intensely orange rock formations, grottos, islets and caverns all carved out of wave erosion over thousands of years.
Relaxing holidays: Whilst Carvoeiro is certainly still a thriving fishing village, it’s perfectly possible to find quiet coves, pine forests and peaceful spots amongst the hillside. The centre of town has its fair share of bars and restaurants, but not too many to make Carvoeiro holidays for 2022 crowded or overbearing.
Attractions in Carvoeiro
Fort of Nossa Senhora da Coneicao: This ruined fort was built in 1670 as a strategic defence from invaders attacking from the sea. Sadly only one of the original gates remains, but it’s still possible to see some fantastic views from the top. Additionally, you’ll also see a shrine dedicated to Senhora da Encarnacao, a saint highly revered by Portuguese fishermen.
Alfazima Lighthouse: This towering white tiled lighthouse stands in a prominent position on the edge of a cliff. Built in 1920, it was created in a rectangular rather than spherical shape, and is lined with glossy ceramic white tiles.
Activities in Carvoeiro
Zoomarine: This popular zoo and theme park offers a whole host of fun attractions on Algarve holidays. Within its grounds you can view a 4D cinema, see huge life size models of scary sharks and even relax at the large swimming pools based here. That’s not forgetting the fun rides like rubber dinghy slides, a big wheel and brilliant animal shows.
Algar Seco: The biggest attraction of Carvoeiro holidays, this natural site is of breathtaking beauty. Formed from thousands of years of wave erosion, bright orange rocks rise at irregular angles with weathered layers and holes creating water chimneys. Interestingly, a bar has actually been built within the rock formations, so it’s possible to stop and have a drink whilst you admire this stunning site. It’s certainly a place with many photo opportunities, so get snapping!
Beaches in Carvoeiro
Praia do Carvoeiro: The main beach on Carvoeiro holidays is definitely enticing. It has a stretch of lightly golden sand, lined with a rocky headland jutting out into the sea. The whitewashed village of Carvoeiro overlooks the beach, perched on the natural cliff face. There are even caves and caverns to explore around the beach!
Praia do Carvhalo: Around 5km east from Carvoeiro holidays, here’s another incredibly beautiful beach found along the Algarve coastline. Praia do Carvhalo is backed by white rocky cliffs and cotton soft cream coloured sand. It also leads to turquoise waters with a pointed rock rising from the sea.
Praia do Paraiso: This small, quiet cove is the perfect place to choose if you just want to get away from it all during your holidays here. The golden sand and amber cliff tops really do make this beach seem like ‘paradise’ just as its name means translated from Portuguese!
Restaurants in Carvoeiro
Jota Lita: This authentic Portuguese restaurant has a real focus on fresh fish, with delicious dishes like prawn kebabs and swordfish steaks. The house wine also has a very special and unique flavour, being described as ‘green’ wine! Prices are pretty cheap, so it’s a great option to choose if you’re having cheap holidays in Carvoeiro.
La Bella Vita: This classy restaurant prides itself on excellent presentation, with artistically displayed dishes such as tiramisu and classic chicken Piri Piri. With meals such as salmon fettucini and melon soup, there’s quite a strong Italian focus, but there’s definitely room for traditional Portuguese cuisine to try during Carvoeiro holidays too!
Taste: Fancy a ‘taste’ of tapas while you’re on your holidays? Well this restaurant is perfect for you! There’s a real warm atmosphere here too, as there’s a bar below keeping things a little livelier. The tapas food has a great mix of Spanish and Portuguese cuisine, whilst the bar downstairs serves a fantastic variety of exotic cocktails. It’s a restaurant worth trying , even if you’re on all inclusive holidays here.
Nightlife in Carvoeiro
Tourist-focused bars: Despite being a fairly small town, Carvoeiro holidays have a number of friendly bars aimed at enhancing the holidaymaker experience. Specifically, there’s Bar Jailhouse, which has live music and a disco afterwards, all in a quaint cottage interior of white washed walls and wooden beams. Bar Havana is also a great place to go, as the colourful Cuban design and large range of fruity cocktails really make it feel like a fiesta.
