Carnival Dominica, (Dominican Republic) The Location Where Spain meets Latin America, and this picturesque part of the Caribbean offers great value for money too! It has a tropical climate with miles of golden and sandy beaches which are dotted with palm trees. It’s a very popular destination for British holiday makers. Accommodation is available on both the North and South Coast, and although most resorts on the island remain fairly young in development- hotel facilities are fantastic and there is always something to see and do. The Event The Dominican Carnival, “Carnival Dominica” – is a colourful celebration where the nation and visitors to the destination come together to sing and dance in the streets in a celebration full of joy. The Dominican has celebrations throughout the year, but none can match the sheer enthusiasm, creativity and magnitude of this one. The high light of this carnival is the parades in which locals flash their costumes of colour which are made to traditional designs. Look out for the most popular and important one- “diablo cojuelo” a bright coloured costume with a Devil mask. What’s on? Dance the night away in the streets, no matter where you are celebrations take place throughout the island with the biggest parades on a weekend. The Parades are fantastic, and as ever there is plenty for you to see and do. When to go The celebrations reach their peak in the last days of February, but sometime run into march so you may not see the grand Finale if you don’t plan ahead. The celebration buzz is throughout the island so no matter if you are staying in the larger resorts, a village in the countryside or a massive hotel complex- you are sure to experience some of the celebratory essence. The Fiesta is also celebrated through most of February on the weekends, but is not as colourful as it gets toward the end of the month.
