La Palma

One of the smallest Canary Islands, La Palma is often called La Isla Bonita because of the beauty of the small island. Completely unspoilt by an influx of tourists and without the usual high-rise hotel developments, La Palma is the place to go if you prefer peace and quiet and gorgeous surroundings.

La PalmaLa Palma is the most volcanically active Canary Island but don't let that put you off! The islands volcanoes are closely monitored - the last eruption was the Teneguia volcano in 1971. La Palma is also one of the newest Canary Islands and rises quite sharply up from the ocean floor. The highest point on the island is Roquede De Los Muchachos which rises over 2000m and is the site of the astronomical observatory - imagine what you can see from all the way up there!

For things to do on La Palma, a wander around the picture-perfect towns and villages with their white-washed cottages and hanging baskets full of bright flowers offers a nice peaceful afternoon and some great holiday snap opportunities. If you enjoy beach holidays, then La Palma also offers some gorgeous, uncluttered beaches for you to spend your holiday on! A day at the beach is cheap and it can be fun finding the most deserted cove you can and then stretching out on the volcanic black sand to soak up the sun and maybe paddle in the unbelievably clear waters!

Zarza Archaeological Park is worth a visit to see the cave carvings drawn by the ancient natives of La Palma. Cueva Bonita, lush gardens, architecture and the daunting heights of the observatory - for a little island, La Palma has a whole lot of things to do! The biggest attraction of La Palma though is the National Park of Taburiente. A cheap-as-chips way to spend your holiday, wandering around the endless forests or mountain summit paths! Not only will you get fit, you'll get to see some of the best scenery in the world! Gaze in awe at the imposing volcanoes, listen to the song birds in the rain forests and fall completely in love with the black volcanic landscapes marked with lava roads and lonely pines…

La Palma may have fewer restaurants than the more popular resorts but the few restaurants it has are full of simple, tasty, cheap food that can't be beaten! The main dishes mostly consist of fish or pork and vegetables with a variety of sauces. The island also has many tapas bars that shouldn't be missed! The seafood restaurants are quite simply decadent and you won't find fresher or cheaper fish anywhere! La Palma isn't really a tourist place but the main 'tourist resorts' do have a few bars where you can have a friendly night out with the locals!

As we said before, La Palma doesn't have any of the eye-sore high rise hotels that are common to other resorts. The few hotels on La Palma are generally quite cheap hotels and they have a very friendly atmosphere to them. Rather than hotels, most people who come to La Palma prefer to stay in private cottages, although the advantage of a hotel is not having to lift a finger after a hard days sight-seeing! Cottages may be cheaper, but for creature-comforts we'd advise finding a hotel - all have spectacular views and facilities so just take your pick!
