La Gomera

The second smallest of the Canary Islands, the now dormant volcano of La Gomera is a great place for awe-inspiring sights and invigorating walks. If you like your holidays with striking valleys and imposing mountains, you'll love La Gomera! Less of a holiday tourist trap than the other Canary Islands, La Gomera is perfect for peaceful, sight-seeing holidays.

La GomeraLa Gomera has a lot of history for such a small island. The island is famous for being the last stop Christopher Columbus made before sailing across the Atlantic - the house Columbus stayed in can still be visited! The island is also well known for the ingenious and highly unique "Silbo". This is a whistling language used by Gomerans to communicate across the steep barrancos - valleys - and the whistling language can still be heard today!

The dormant volcano of La Gomera is the site for the biggest attraction on the island - the Garajonay National Park and World Heritage Site. A wonderland of cloud-wreathed mountains, hillsides covered in heather and tropical forests, Garajonay looks like a set from The Lord of the Rings. The highest parts of the national park are constantly hidden by mysterious clouds and effervescent mists which contribute to the lushness of the area and the forests. Garajonay has clearly marked routes and paths that you can walk, jog or cycle along and the log-cabin restaurant at Laguna Grande in the park has some of the best pork on the island!

As for beaches, La Gomera has some absolute beauties! The black sand beach of the islands capital San Sebastian may be slightly rockier than some but the crystal clear waters make for excellent scuba diving and water sports! All around La Gomera you'll find small deserted beaches that make for a perfect afternoon in the tropical sun and the perfect holiday!

La Gomera has few hotels and most hotels are centred around San Sebastian and the harbour. The Parador hotel in San Sebastian is a four star manor house hotel with a great view of Mount Teide, nautical decoration and tropical gardens, the perfect place to spend your holiday! Another top hotel to have a luxurious holiday in is the Hotel Jardin Tecina on the south coast of La Gomera. Made up of cottages in tropical gardens and set on top of a cliff, the Hotel Jardin Tecina offers sensational views and is the perfect place to relax after a hard-days sight-seeing!

A holiday to La Gomera is one that offers the best of everything and that you'll remember for a lifetime!
