Maheri
Set in the west of Crete is the tiny village of Maheri. A complete hideaway holiday destination, the village of Maheri is one of the most traditional villages in Crete and Greece and as such, no new developments can be planned there - once you see the village of Maheri, you'll be thankful for this!
Maheri is probably set in the most scenic surroundings that Crete and Greece have to offer. The White Mountains form a back drop and the village is nestled among green-covered slops and cliffs, with a view of the sparkling blue sea below. The village of Maheri makes you see why people love the traditional Crete - small rustic houses, cobbled streets and tiny courtyards. The single taverna of Maheri village is both friendly and serves up some of the best food in Greece and Crete! Worth a visit is the white chapel of Saint John which is built into a split in the rock face!
Hiring a car is your best option if you travel to Maheri, that way you can take day trips to the gorgeous beaches around the area - although the sea looks close enough to jump into from Maheri Village, we wouldn't advise it! The nearby village of Neo Chorio is only a short walk away and offers more tavernas though it doesn't have the views or the atmosphere of Maheri!
