Resort Guides -> Canary Islands
Imagine a group of islands where the weather remains sunny all year round. Imagine any type of landscape you can.Welcome, to the Canary Islands. The essence of paradise.
The Canaries are often referred to as The Islands of Eternal Spring because the weather is always fantastic. An archipelago consisting of seven main islands and a few smaller ones throw in for good measure, the Canary Islands are set just off the Coast of Africa in the Atlantic Ocean. The Canary Islands are famed and revered for their variety of landscapes - no one island is the same as another so no matter what it is you want from a holiday, the Canaries will provide!
The Canary Islands are formed from undersea mountain ranges which protrude from the sea to form the islands that have become a Mecca for the serious tourist. All volcanic in origin, The Canary Islands are the perfect place to go for last-minute deals, cheap holidays and just if you want something that little bit different.
The largest Canary Island, Tenerife is most well-known for being a place of beach holidays, cheap shopping and wild nights on the town! Aside from the more touristy aspects of Tenerife though, the island has the highest mountain in all of Spain - Mount Teide - which is a dormant volcano and stands in the crater of an even larger volcano. Surrounding Mount Teide is the Las Canadas National Park where pine forests gently meld into the volcanic landscape. Another well-known place on Tenerife is the Los Gigantes cliffs which tower over the ocean.
Holidays to the Canary Island of Tenerife are generally favoured by the younger crowd because of the perpetual party atmosphere in the evenings. Because of this, many cheap holidays are available so if you like tons of sun, miles of beach, scores of scenery and energetic evenings, then Tenerife is the place for you!
Gran Canaria is the third largest of the Canary Islands. It has one of the best beaches out of all the Canaries - the Maspalomas beach with its picturesque sand dunes. Out of all the Canaries, Gran Canaria is known as the holiday isle that is most like a mini-continent because of its varying climate and landscape depending on which part of the island you visit. Gran Canaria has many attractions which make it popular, such as the famous beaches, the wild west town of Sioux City, Palmitos Park full of rare birds, swinging night-life and the scenic mountains and canyons in the middle of the island!
Fuerteventura is the oldest out of the Canaries and is the Canary Island most well-known for its miles of beautiful sandy beaches. With a similar climate to Africa, Fuerteventura is one Canary Island where you're guaranteed a tan! The waters of Fuerteventura are subject to a healthy breeze which is why the island hosts windsurfing competitions - so if you love watersports, then a holiday here will suit you down to the ground. Although not as lively as Tenerife, Fuerteventura can still throw a good party and the volcanic landscape is a treat not to be missed!
The fourth largest Canary Island, Lanzarote is home to the longest volcanic tunnel in the world - the Atlantida Tunnel which stretches over seven kilometres long. Lanzarote has one of the finest beaches in all the Canaries, the Papagayo beach which makes it a perfect holiday destination for beach lovers. And if you prefer nature then you'll love the Timanfaya National Park with it out-of-this-world lunarscape. Lanzarote offers some great last-minute holidays and cheap shopping opportunities - what's not to like?
La Gomera. The Canary Island that has its own whistling language. The last stop Columbus made before sailing to the New World. Holidays in La Gomera offer the tranquility often missing from the more touristy islands of the Canaries. The Garajonay National Park (yes, another one!) is a picture-perfect landscape of cloud covered peaks, heather-covered hills and dew misted forests. Holidays to La Gomera are cheap - afterall, sight-seeing is free! Once you visit this Canary Island you really won't want to leave!
La Palma is often called La Isla Bonita because of its startling beauty - said to be the most beautiful Canary Island of them all! La Palma is the most volcanically active of the Canaries but it contains the beautiful Taburiente National Park to compensate! With hidden beaches, miles of countryside and hidden lava flows, this is one holiday you won't forget!
Hierro is the smallest of the Canaries but for all that, it's still one of the most picturesque Canary Islands! Not as touristy as the rest, Hierro offers a holiday full of peace and quiet and stunning scenery of woods, volcanoes and soft soft sand!
The Canary Islands are the holiday destination of choice for the discerning traveller. If you like cheap, last-minute holidays, the Canaries are the perfect choice. If you like getting as much as you can out of a holiday, if you love dramatic scenery, gorgeous beaches, friendly people and sunshine every day...visit the Canary Islands!
