How did the Maldives come to be known as
the Maldives? Us Brits of course! Well, we played a part anyway… During the colonial era (don’t worry you’re not in for a history lesson) the Dutch decided to refer to the islands as ‘Maldivische Eilanden’ and thanks to our time saving abbreviation skills it came to be known as the Maldive Islands and later just Maldives.
Now, some of you are probably thinking that that isn’t the best reason to visit the islands and; you would be right. Although we all like any excuse to feel a bit of British pride, I think that we all like warm, sandy beaches and tropical waters even more don’t we? And with the Maldives, tropical is definitely what you get!
Located in the beautiful waters of the Indian Ocean, the chain of the twenty-six atolls (atolls meaning a ring like coral island and reef that nearly or entirely encloses a lagoon) covers nearly thirty-five thousand square miles, which makes it one the most dispersed countries in the world and with the Indian Ocean acting as a ‘heat sponge’ the climate of the Maldives ranges from 24°C to 33°C throughout the year. The humidity may be a little high but with the lovely cool sea breeze coming in, it won’t be on your mind for long - Now if that’s not all-year-round tropical paradise weather, I don’t know what is!
The incredible natural beauty is reason enough to visit the islands but if you are a diver or want to try it, there is no better place in our opinion, as the Maldives are home to some of the most awe-inspiring marine life and coral reefs in the world and with its crystal clear waters that are pretty much the same temperature as your bath water, it will be hard to feel uncomfortable and out of your comfort zone.
But as well as being islands of pleasure, the Maldives are also islands of industry, with many dedicated to trade. So as well as being able to feel alone and finally get some peace and quiet, you can also feel a part of the welcoming community and visit some of the islands that are busy with activity. Although, we wouldn’t blame you if you never left the beach!
Unlike some islands, the Maldives are warm all year round, so you can plan your trip whenever you like and with our flexible and affordable holiday packages, you are in control, so you can completely relax when you get there and focus on soaking up the tropical sun.
