After Mallorca and Menorca, Ibiza is the third island in the Balearic archipel in term of surface. Ibiza is situated on the Mediterranean Sea and was called Pitiuses in the beginning which means the pines on the island in Greek.

Ibiza was formed way back in 1600 B.C although Diodoro Siculo gave the first reference about the island before the year 654 when Carthage created Iboism. Iboism now the capital of the Island is called Eivissa.

During the Romanian dominance Ibiza was titled as the ‘Confederate city’ and the next five centuries were named ‘dark centuries’ because very little information is found. Byzantine and Barbarians owned the island until the year 711 and called it ‘yebisah’.

The date of the Catalan Conquest that is 8th august 1235 is a historic moment when Ibiza and Formentera joined the ‘western world’. Ibiza was also a meeting point for the Saracen vessels ruined by the Mediterranean Sea and sheltered by the Turkish squad. These were the times when the fortress and the churches were built surrounding the island.

At present the island of Ibiza is divided into five portions, Eivissa-the capital of Ibiza, Sant Antoni, Santa Eularia, Sant Joan and Sant Josep.

The party capital of the world, Ibiza is not just for party animals, but also boasts of a rich history. It not only attracts night creatures but also holds historical interest for the history lovers. The island was founded in 654 B.C. by the Phoenicians and subsequently conquered by several empires including the Moors and the Romans. The Phoenicians worshipped God Bes, who was not only strong but also a music lover. The island was named Ibosim after his name and is still known for its music and dancing across the world.

Due to its strategic location between Spain and the African continent, the island was treasured as a colony as well as a trading location. It had a history of Greek trade relations before being ruled by Carthaginians. The island was later occupied by the Vandals and then by the Byzantines, before falling in the hands of Moors. In 1235, it was invaded by Christians and placed in custody of the King of Aragon. It was quite recently in fifties and sixties that hippies came to the island and started the music revolution that attracts tourists and party lovers from world over.

The prime occupation of the islands was salt manufacture and fishing. The renewed interest in the island’s heritage, traditions and the magic of the island is inviting thousands of visitors every year providing a major boost to the economy as well as the livelihood of the natives.
