Madeira – Portugals Popular Island!
25th May, 2012
If you want to holiday somewhere new this year and experience something a little different from the usual 'mainland' holidays, then the island of Madeira is a great destination to choose for your 2012 break! Located in the Atlantic Ocean just to the south of Portugal and east of Morocco, Madeira sits with the island of Porto Santo and a small group of islands to make up an archipelago. The steep, mountainous terrain gives the islands the unique look that they are famous for and offers tourists and would-be explorers the perfect environment to discover the unique landscape and the wonderful cultural sites that lay within. Funchal is the capital of the island and is home to the majority of the cultural sites and attractions that help tell the story of the islands history. One of the most popular cultural attractions is the Cathedral of Funchal. This awesome sites dates back to 1514 and is one of the oldest buildings in Madeira that's still standing today! Another popular site that's well worth a visit is the Baltazar Dias Municipal Theatre and although being over 150 years old it is still a fully functioning theatre! There are also some wonderful little villages dotted around the mountain tops and with cable car access running to and from the mountain tops, accessing the heights can be very easy and convenient! If sunbathing is what you do best then you're in safe hands, as Madeira offers plenty of places to work on your tan and relax including Praia Formosa where you will find three volcanic beaches and also a pebbled section of coastline. Each offers the perfect opportunity to catch some rays and enjoy the beautiful waters of the Atlantic where you can enjoy some fantastic watersports in the summer months! If you're planning on bringing the little ones there are plenty of open air swimming pools around the towns so you can let the kids let off some steam without having to worry about sea currents and salt water. For entertainment off of the beach, there are plenty of shops, bars and restaurants especially in the capital of Funchal. Whether you are holidaying alone or with the whole family, Madeira holidays are perfect for all!
