As you’ve probably guessed, we love the
Canary Islands, mainly because they have everything you need to fully enjoy your holiday, as well as having new and interesting sights that you can’t see anywhere else! However, we also understand that many of us don’t want to holiday somewhere that has a complete lack of modern amenities, and that’s where Gran Canaria comes in!
With the second largest population and with the capital Las Palmas de Gran Canaria being the number one largest city out of all of the Canary Islands, there is no way that you will feel out of touch with modern living! You will find everything you would expect and need from a large city, including many great shops, restaurants, cafes, bars, clubs, gyms and much more! But don’t worry, if you are a lover of culture and history, don’t let the modern feel of the city put you off as much of the architecture is very old indeed and displays some wonderful examples of the islands past such as the old square and with the city being declared a UNESCO world heritage site, you can rest assured that you can have the modern amenities and the historic feel all at the same time! If you were thinking of emigrating then this would be the place to be!
Weather wise, the island has come to be known as a mini-continent, due to the many micro-climates that are spread around the island. This is mainly due to the significant height differences in land around the island, from the rocky, mountainous region in the north, where rain is more common, to the lower, sunnier regions in the south, where we would recommend staying. You can enjoy highs of 27 degrees celsius in the summer but more importantly you can also enjoy highs of up to 20 degrees celsius in the winter! Making it another great winter time destination, when you just can’t take the English weather any longer!
There are many more fantastic areas of Gran Canaria that we will be telling you about very soon, so keep posted to learn more about what these truly fantastic destinations could offer you on your 2012 holiday!
