Athens – A great city break!‏

Every now and then we all need to get awayAthens holiday resort from our busy lifestyles and treat ourselves to a little trip somewhere nice, even if it’s just for a weekend. So if you’ve been thinking about getting away for a while but want something a little more active and inspiring than just sitting around catching a tan on a beach somewhere, then we have the perfect place for you!

Athens, the capital city of Greece is without a doubt one of the most inspiring places to visit in the entire world! Famous for being the home of many innovative thinkers during the Classical period, who brought along huge changes in thinking within medicine, politics, philosophy and art, Athens is said the be the origin of the whole of the western civilisation that we are all a part of today!

Although the area is fairly mountainous with Mt Pendeli, Mt Ymettos and Mt Parnitha surrounding Athens, much of the city is relatively low-lying in comparison not including the twelve hills inside the city itself that are home to some of the most historic sights, such as Acropolis, which is home to the ancient ‘high city’ of athens. The Acropolis as it is known, is the number one destination for tourists visiting the city who wish to see the ancient architecture still standing atop. The most popular structure is the Parthenon, a temple that was originally dedicated to the Greek goddess Athena. Another must see is the Temple of Athena Nike, which was the first temple on the Acropolis and is one of the few amphiprostyle temples in all of Greece! There’s also much more to see on top of the Acroplois, including the amazing views of the city below, which also gives you the chance to get away from the hustle and bustle of the busy streets below.

Just below the Acropolis is the New Acropolis Museum, which was designed by Swiss architect Bernard Tschumi. This new replacement of the old museum was opened in June 2009 and is a definite must see for anyone visiting the city.

There is also a fantastic selection of shops and an excellent variety of restaurants serving varied cuisine and with the mix of modern, traditional and ancient architecture, you will be able to enjoy experiencing history while still having all of the luxuries of modern living.

Athens is definitely a must see and although you may not be able to experience every part of all of the great districts of the city on a weekend break, Sunmaster also offer some fantastic extended breaks, so check out our latest deals to find out more!
