The Unforgettable Dakhla Oasis

One of Egypt’s most beautiful oases, the Dakhla oasis is a green belt containing orchards, gardens, and diverse wildlife against the backdrop of mountains.

Folklore has it that the Dakhla Oasis has been inhabited since ancient times, and that the lake was often visited by ostriches and elephants. The Nile valley then became the home of the migrants who moved out eventually as the lake started receding.

Walls made of red coloured rocks dominate the northern part of the Dakhla Oasis. Cultivations of rice, mulberry, date palms, figs, and other citrus fruits dot the sand dunes in this belt of stunning natural beauty. Dakhla is also renowned for its unique water wheels that are driven by buffaloes.

The tourist attractions in Dakhla include the ancient Bashendi that houses Roman tombs, the Al-Muzawaka tomb, Ayyubid mosque, and the DeirAl-Hagar temple. The ‘Museum of Inheritance’ is located at Mut, the largest settlement in Dakhla, and it has rooms with sculpted clay figures that exhibits different aspects of the Dakhlan culture.

The old town is a network of pathways with mud walls on either side and narrowly separated houses with intricately-sculpted wooden lintels. Like the rest of the Dakhla Oasis, it is a place that you will instantly fall in love with and remember for the rest of your life.
