Resort Guides -> Balearic Islands
The Balearic Islands are situated in the Mediterranean Sea between Spain and the northern coast of Africa. The Balearic Islands are made up of Majorca which is the largest island, Menorca the second largest island, Ibiza and Formentera which is the smallest Balearic Island. The Balearic Islands are popular for providing cheap last minute holidays and they’re also popular because each island offers something different!
Majorca is known as the Balearic Island of contrasts and with over six million tourists a year booking cheap last minute holidays, it must be doing something right! Majorca is popular for its gorgeous beaches which could rival any in Spain! The capital of Palma is always a popular place to visit with its huge Gothic Cathedral and a trip to the famous caves in Majorca really make a holiday there something spectacular! Majorca also has some very lively nightlife in the busier resorts, which makes Majorca one of the favourite places for a holiday in the Balearic Islands!
Menorca is one of the quieter Balearic Islands and one of the most unspoilt where you can get a true taste of Spain! Menorca is a biosphere reserve and has some gorgeous scenery, especially with Mount Toro providing a backdrop. Menorca is often described as an ‘open-air museum’ because of the wealth of historic architecture and artefacts that the island has – but if sight-seeing doesn’t appeal to you, Menorca has more beaches than Majorca and Ibiza put together – and some of the nicest beaches in all of Spain – no wonder people love the Balearics for beach holidays!
Ibiza is the Balearic Island best known for last-minute holidays and having some of the best clubs anywhere, but although Ibiza is known as party central, it’s not all cheap pubs and cheap clubs! Loved by hippies for the islands beauty and the cheap cost of living, Ibiza has lots of hippy markets and lots of quiet resorts surrounded by beautiful scenery and beaches!
Formentera is the least known Balearic Island and is completely unspoilt. You can have a cheap, last minute holiday here by just jumping on a ferry from Ibiza and here you’ll find some of the best scenery and some of the nicest beaches in all of Spain – a truly relaxing place!
The Balearic Islands are really something else. They have some of the best food, not only in Spain, but anywhere! Small hidden tapas bars serve cheap food that will be unlike anything you’ve ever tasted and the fish restaurants – well, even the King of Spain enjoys the fish restaurants of the Balearic Islands! The main reason people travel to the Balearic Islands isn’t just the last minute cheap deals available, nor is it the nightlife, the beaches or the endless sunshine – although these are a big part of it! People love the Balearic Islands because each island offers something different and has some of the most wondrous natural beauty around – beaches, cliffs, lagoons, forests – the Balearic Islands have it all!
